What NOT To Do When Visiting Chicago

Image

Chicago is a great city to visit. There is so much to see and do, from the museums and the outdoor activities to the boat tours, sporting events, nightlife, shopping, and restaurants. You are going to be spoilt for choice. But to help make sure your trip goes as smoothly as possible and you can make the most of everything Chicago has to offer, read on to find out what NOT to do while in the city.

Don’t buy Cubs tickets in advance – Whether you are a fan of baseball or not, a trip to Chicago is not complete with visiting Wrigley Field. However, this is one place whereby you do not need to buy tickets in advance. With so many day games taking place, the ballpark does not sell out very often, and so you can buy tickets once you arrive and you can often get them for cheaper than face value. There isn’t a bad seat in the house, so you can choose the cheapest tickets and you will still have a great seat.

Don’t just stick to Chicago – You have made the journey all of the way to America, and while Chicago is great, there are plenty of other amazing places too. Why not take a direct flight from Chicago to Florida? You can stay at hotels that are near the beach like the Courtyard Sandestin at Grand Boulevard so you can incorporate some sun and sand into your vacation too. Of course, this merely scratches the surface of the places worth visiting. From Las Vegas to New York, America has some incredible tourist spots.

Don’t only go shopping at Michigan Avenue – Michigan Avenue, which is also known as the Magnificent Mile, is great for high-end designer shops like Louis Vuitton and Gucci. You will also find specialty stores and department stores. However, if you are looking for something a little bit different to the norm, extend your shopping experience to the likes of Bucktown and Wicker Park. Here you will find lots of independent jewellery and clothing boutiques, as well as specialty thrift stores and antique furniture shops.

Don’t skip the museums – Yes, Chicago is great for sporting events, nightlife, shopping, and restaurants, but while you are enjoying all of this, don’t forget about the museums. If you only have time to incorporate one into your trip, it should definitely be the Art Institute of Chicago.

Don’t visit when it is cold – Last but not least, don’t visit Chicago during the winter! There is no getting away from it; the winters are miserable, pretty much like here in the UK. Visit between May and September so you can fully experience everything that the city has to offer.

If you can avoid the common tourist traps and mistakes that have been presented above, you can ensure you have the time of your life in Chicago and a vacation to remember for all of the right reasons. Enjoy!

xoxo,
Therese
