Beat The Heat: Simple (Yet Effective) Tips For Staying Cool In Warm Weather

There's no doubt that the end of winter is something that plenty of people are seriously pleased about. Spring is fully underway, and the weather is just going to keep getting more and more pleasant. The problem is that, for many of us, the winter has been so long and miserable that we've forgotten how to cope with the nice weather. There's nothing worse than that first day that you realize you didn't need to leave the house in a full jacket and you're doomed to spend the rest of the day sweating profusely. So, for those who've spent a long time suffering through the cold winter and are struggling to adjust to the increasing heat, here are a few ways to stay cool in the warm weather.

Dress light

This one actually has two meaning. Firstly, and most obviously, you should make sure to avoid a lot of layers. Wear loose clothes made from fairly thin, breathable fabrics. Secondly, you should stick to light colors. Not only are they a lot more in keeping with seasonal styles but light colors actually reflect light and heat so that you stay cool, while dark colors absorb them and end up making you even hotter.

Get an A/C

There really is nothing like stepping into a room with an air conditioner running on an insanely hot day. An A/C is especially good when the humidity is particularly high as well as they can often remove some of the moisture from the air. Of course, not everyone's going to have the kind of budget or know how to be able to install an air conditioner in their home so you might want to look into a portable A/C. Make sure that it has a venting kit though because trying to vent a portable A/C can be a bit of a pain without one. Also be careful about how long you leave the A/C running since they do use a fair amount of power.

Of course, if you're at work then you're probably not going to be able to drag an A/C in with you and sadly a lot of workplaces are seriously unequipped to deal with the warm weather. If you spend all day sitting at a desk, surrounded by heat-generating computers, then it's easy to start feeling pretty sweaty and exhausted. Set up a couple of fans on opposite sides of your desk so that you can have a cross breeze with you in the center.

Get creative

There are plenty of interesting, creative ways to stay cool that have been used for centuries. You could go with the Egyptian method of dampening a sheet or towel and using that as a blanket. Or you could just stuff your sheets in the fridge or freezer for a few minutes before getting into bed. They'll warm up pretty quickly, but it's certainly going to make trying to fall asleep on a hot, humid night a heck of a lot easier than it would otherwise. Filling a roasting tray with ice and setting that up in front of a fan also works surprisingly well to get cool air circulating through the room.
