The South Shall Rise Again! Vacation Spots In The Southern States Of America

Heading to the states of the southernmost reaches of America is an adventure like no other. Going on vacation to anywhere in the deep south is a way to connect with America’s roots via the heartlands. From the effortless cool of New Orleans to the family-pleasing Columbia in South Carolina, and even Orlando without Disney World is pretty cool! So if you’re looking for a way to get out there and see what the South has to offer, try these three places.

New Orleans

Is there anywhere cooler than New Orleans? If there is, I don’t wanna know about it! If you like any type of music, New Orleans is your place to go, but they specialize in the jazz bands and party music that you see in the movies. New Orleans is, of course, home to the Mardi Gras, a party like no other! Held over two weeks, the Mardi Gras is a mass celebration, including parades, carnivals and has the greatest atmosphere on earth! Another part of the celebration includes the wearing of masks, and social clubs are embedded in the tradition. The end of Mardi Gras involves a ceremony known as the “Meeting Of The Courts” which happens at the conclusion of two masked balls. As midnight on Shrove Tuesday, the carnival is over, and Ash Wednesday marks the start of Lent. With the party atmosphere that surrounds Mardi Gras, you need to purge a few things for some time afterward! But it is one hell of a party! Just pack the essentials and go wild!

Columbia, South Carolina

Not to be confused with the country, the capital of South Carolina has things to entertain all sorts of people. You can go to the Riverbanks Zoo & Botanical Garden, which, if you are fascinated by animals, natural and exotic, is a fantastic place to see tigers, elephants, crocodiles, bears, gorillas and much more. The Botanical Garden has more than 4200 species of plants.
If you have a design and creative streak, you can see the history of art in the old Mill Textile Building, now known as the South Carolina State Museum. The museum also has other exhibitions on cultural history and science and technology. If you are looking for some of the best getaways in South Carolina that isn’t educational, then go see a sports game played by the University of South Carolina Gamecocks including baseball, basketball, golf and so much more!

Not just a place for Disney World! Orlando has so many things to offer besides an over sized mouse and undersized castle. In fact, there are so many free things to do during the day and night. The Orlando Eye costs money to get on, but you can watch the light show that the wheel has on every night. Lakeridge Winery has 80 acres to tour around, and there are free tasting tours and festivals. In Winter Park, you can go see a classic movie in luxurious surroundings with the Popcorn Flicks In The Park event, and at the Universal Resort, there is the nightly “Musica Della Notte” show at sunset.

Are you thinking of going to the south for the holidays? Check out my suggestions and you will surely enjoy time away from the cold!
