Travel Essentials: What To Research Before You Go

Summer has arrived, and for many of us, this means it’s time to enjoy a well-earned rest. Are you jetting off to sunny climes? Are you embarking on a backpacking adventure? Or are you planning a chic city break? Wherever you’re heading, here’s what to research before you go.

Passports and visas

Before you start thinking about packing and itineraries, it’s always a good idea to check your passport. You’ll also need to research visa requirements. Is your passport in date? Do you have enough time left on it if you’re flying long haul? Do you need a visa to travel to your desired destination? If you do need a visa or a new passport, it’s advisable to give yourself plenty of time. Sometimes, the application process can take weeks. If you’re not sure what you need, you’ll find helpful advice online. You can find out what a Canadian eTA visa is , for example, or whether you need a visa to travel to the UK or Australia.

Where to stay

Before you set off on vacation, have a look at recommendations for hotels and resorts. If you’re going on a beach holiday, you may want a hotel with a private beach. Or you may prefer to stay within walking distance of the resort center. If you’re going to a city, would you rather be in the heart of the action? Or would you prefer the peace and quiet of the suburbs? Think about transport links and how you’ll get around when you get there.

The weather

The weather may have a major bearing on your packing plans. Think about what you’ll need for the type of the holiday you’re going and the weather conditions. If the forecast is wall-to-wall sunshine, you’ll need light clothes, swimwear, and sunscreen. If you’re going on a city break, you may want a mixture of casual and formal clothing. You may also need to pack an umbrella or a light raincoat. If the forecast is not looking so promising, take some layers with you.

Travel health

If you’re traveling to an exotic location, you may need to have immunizations before you go. Contact your doctor or seek advice online. If you do need injections, it’s best to book them well in advance of your departure date.

Currency

When you’re planning your trip, find out what currency you will need. You may need to order your money before you go. It’s also a good idea to see if credit cards are widely accepted and have a look at the exchange rate. If you have a good idea of the rate, you can work out how much things cost when you get there.

If you’re preparing to spread your wings and fly away this summer, a little research may go a long way. Find out whether you need a visa to travel and check your passport. Have a look at the weather forecast and read up on hotels and the best areas to visit. Research travel health and order your currency. Once you’ve ticked off your to-do list, you can relax, and start counting down the days.
