The Secret Behind Craft Activities for People With Dementia

Dementia is a tough illness both for the person suffering from it and their family and friends. Their lack of short term memory retention can create problems in living day to day life. One way of helping a person suffering from Dementia is to provide stimulating and safe activities for the to do.

Safety

Firstly with any dementia patient activity, safety is key. If the sufferer is still living at home, make sure they are well supervised. Also, ensure that any potential hazardous elements of the activity are locked away when you are not there. You could even get a craft carry bag and take the materials with you each time.

If the patient is in a care home setting, the carers may need to make an assessment on the viability of particular craft items.  Stuff like materials for making jewelry, knives, or hot glue could be dangerous. Luckily, there are many different products available in the craft industry, so why not see if there is a less risky replacement? For example, hot glue could be replaced with sticky dots and craft knives with safety scissors.

Social

Next, doing a craft activity is a splendid way of getting a person with dementia to be social. Dementia can be very isolating for the sufferer as they are not always aware of who people are, even when they are with them. Therefore, it's critical that they receive some good social contact. Remember that it is also a great way for you to spend some quality time with your loved one that doesn't depend on going over old memories.

This is especially true if the person lives at home. They will definitely need additional social contact.   For people living in a care home, the social side of things can be a little better as there are often groups and get together run by the home. In fact, good quality care home often have separate dementia units, where people with the same issues are homed next to others like them. This makes companionship easier, see this from Hopton Cottage Care Homes for a better explanation.

Stimulating

Also, keeping a person that has dementia stimulated is so important. Having something that they can focus and succeed on, is perfect for their wellbeing and self-esteem. Remember it can be very confusing to have dementia so make any instructions very clear and don't get annoyed if they ask you for reassurance. Picking an activity that the patient may have enjoyed in their earlier life is also a good idea. They may well remember how to knit intricate designs or draw complicates subjects with a little help from you.

In the moment

The real secret to doing craft activities with people with dementia is that it gives them something positive to focus on ‘in the now’.  The past and present can be very uncertain for dementia sufferers. Providing a mindful activity to keep them grounded in the current moment and their minds occupied is paramount.
