How To Save Money This Year By Making Your Own Clothes

Money can be something that comes across everyone’s mind at some point in their lives. Mostly this will be down to the lack of funds for one reason or another. You may have lost a job, lost some income or just had your circumstances change. So you will actively look for ways where you can save a bit of extra money. Naturally you will look at your food bills and your outgoings. But the clothes you wear can be quite a big cost. That is unless you start to make your clothes. So I thought I would share with you how you can save some money by making your clothes.

Take advantage of knitting

Did you mother or grandmother ever try and teach you to knit? Now is the time to take full advantage of those skills. Even the most amateur person could knit a scarf or a hat for the winter. Knitted jumpers and jackets are quite a fashionable trend for Autumn and Winter. So think how much you could save by making your own. If you shop around, you can pick up some great wool. You may want to consider buying a job lot on sites like eBay.

Research different patterns to try

The internet is a wonderful place to be inspired. The same can go for sewing patterns. For those of you who don’t know, a sewing pattern is what you follow to make an item of clothing. You will cut out the pieces of fabric and sew them together to create an item. There are some great ideas on sites like Pinterest. This is where you can feel inspired. You may want to look at vintage styles or a modern twist on some old favorites.

Source ways to bring them your pieces together

Once you have your sewing patterns, and you have pieced it all together. You may need to consider how some of it may be fastened. There are many options to choose from. Scovill Fasteners have an excellent collection perfect for all different types of clothing. Again buying these in bulk could save you some money in the long run.

Invest in a good sewing machine

The saying that sometimes you have to spend money to save money could never be truer when it comes to making clothes. If you don’t have a decent sewing machine, then you won’t be able to make the clothes to a good standard. A bad machine could cause you to waste fabric and even replace it sooner than you would like

Shop around for fabric

Finally, like anything, shopping around for things can be beneficial when it comes to the purse strings. You may find some fabrics in a sale in some stores where it might be full price in others. Some shops may even do you a deal for some off cuts or end of the line ranges. It’s worth asking around and hunting out those bargains.

I hope this helps you realize where you can save money this year when it comes to making clothes.
