Love Conquers All

Making decisions is hard. Especially if you are faced by this question.

“If you could only pick one, would you rather have Unlimited Wealth, Immeasurable Knowledge, or Everlasting Love? Why?”

To be honest, I was torn of what my answer would be. I mean really who doesn’t want all three?!

I grew up in poverty. My mom and dad just had enough for us to get by and it got worse when my mother got sick. I wasn’t able to finish schooling because we lacked funds. It’s a normal scenario for a Filipino home to just barely get by. The money is never enough. Reality sucks but hey, it is what it is right? You always need money. But we never reached the point that we are unhappy because we don’t have money. There is always a way around things. With this point of view, unlimited wealth is definitely an advantage.

I think I’m academically smart and business minded when I was a kid and while growing up. All the experiences that I had in life were quite challenging compared to others. Selling junk (kalakal) to get a few pesos to go to school, skipping lunches to save money, selling all my handmade crafts just to get by, doing my classmates projects so that I don’t need to pay for a contributions (I even get an extra out of it), and grabbing all the opportunities to make money through campus contests to selling sandwiches in class. Not to mention that never ending promissory notes at the accounting office.

Making money was  my priority during college and I have to admit it wasn’t as fulfilling as I thought it would be. Being an accounting major is an advantage I should say. But more than that I saw something more important; friends and family that will stick with you through thick and thin. Without their LOVE and support I don’t know how I would have survived during those dark chapters of my life.

When I started working, things started to look better for me and my parents. It was great to have a nice salary (by marginalized standards) even if I didn’t finished college. I was happy and content with the life I was living.

Having immeasurable knowledge is definitely great and will give you a head start in life, but it’s not everything. I remember what my mom used to say “You can’t always have everything you want in life, you will always have to compromise”. It’s true. Having money is great and it will work well in your advantage most of the time. But with it you can lose friendships or even family. I don’t believe money is the root of all evil but it will unmask the dark side of most people and reveal their true intentions.

My experiences in life always lead me to think that money is just crucial to our basic survival. Yes in a way it is. But there is always a way to earn it.  You can just apply for a job and get hired and you will have money. It is not much but at least you have something right? You just need budget it well and build sideline businesses with your skills so you can have more and you will be good.

I always think that knowledge is always an advantage. Growing up in the 90’s I just relied on books since the internet was still in an infancy stage, and I must say that the generation today have a lot more access to knowledge than anyone else before. With just a simple click of a button you can get information from google and other apps. Unlike before you actually need to bring a dictionary in class and the bigger the dictionary, the better! So I believe knowledge can be acquired. And I don’t feel the need to have Immeasurable Knowledge since you will just rely on yourself all the time and you will be lonely.

And those are the reasons why I chose EVERLASTING LOVE. Yes I did choose this one ,not because I’m married. I chose this because of all the people that I loved and lost, whether it may be friends, ex-boyfriends and family. Love remains a constant factor for me to be happy and a reason to live my life. I can’t imagine having a ton of money or being ultra-smart if I don’t have someone to share it with. It becomes pointless for me.  Having someone that you love and loves you back for who you are and not what you have is the greatest feeling in the world.

Its not always sunny and there will always be obstacles along the way. But having the right support system that gives you so much love will make all the difference. You will be motivated to accomplish your goals in life. And reaching them with those you love by your side is a lot more special, than it just being handed to you without anyone to celebrate success with (sounds miserable).

In the final analysis we have to understand that as people we are social. We are made to love, be loved, and that is a basic need that we all desire to fulfill. Money comes and money goes. It is not a cure for the heart. It cannot buy true happiness. It can only create the illusion of happiness but that illusion soon fades when we see that there is no one to share in our fortune with. And as important as knowledge is, I would rather have knowledge of love and of the heart. I would rather know the hug of a loving mom or the sweet embrace of a devoted husband than to master all the knowledge of this material world. When the day comes and we all breathe our last breath we will be eternally grateful to be holding the hand and looking into the eyes of the one we love as we slowly drift off into the arms of God.

  2. To be honest I really don't know how to answer that question yet but you've made a valid point for choosing love. In the end, it's what makes you happy that you will choose, and in your case, it's love.

Your story is an inpiration to all that we should not be glued to the worldly things. You are right, love conquers all. And I will choose everlasting love as well. In family, friends, your spouse, it's either "we win as a team, or we lose as a team." I always say that to my hubby. Haaay! Ang ganda nito. Worth sharing.

  4. What a beautiful post. I found so many quotable quotes from here, too, which is great. Especially love this paragraph: "Love remains a constant factor for me to be happy and a reason to live my life. I can’t imagine having a ton of money or being ultra-smart if I don’t have someone to share it with. It becomes pointless for me. Having someone that you love and loves you back for who you are and not what you have is the greatest feeling in the world." :) It speaks truth, and truth is what should matter.

  5. if i still have that old mindset of me, i think i will choose unlimited wealth above any else but my experiences have taught me so many things that there are many other things in life that are way more important than material possessions... so right , like yours, i would rather pick the everlasting Love! Without it, your life has no sense at all!

    1. I can totally relate with you. We all want material things for survival and we want them so that we can provide for the people we love and care the most. so even if someone wants unlimited wealth, the drive of the person is still from the support system (family and friends) :*

  6. Upon reading the choices I immediately know which one to choose -- everlasting love. I've experienced earning a decent salary, somehow I know that I'm intelligent enough, but there are moments when I feel unloved or being not capable of reciprocating love as much as one deserves. I've got anxiety issues and it's the unending love and understanding of my family and husband that makes my life beautiful.

  7. I guess those three choices are what what most people want and/or need. It also depends on how one sees wealth, knowledge and love. Hard to choose but I think there will be a way and luck that you can get those three.

    1. its true! since not everyone has the same experience in life their decision will vary as well. having all 3 would be awesome though :D

  8. Though the three are important, I know in the end, I will always choose love. In our household, if we can't decide right, we always do things that move us to love and everything seems easy and right.

  17. I think I would go for Unlimited Wealth. Immeasurable Knowledge doesn't do you much good if you are the smartest person living on the street and Everlasting Love doesn't promise that the person you have everlasting love with will never die, leaving you with an emptiness you would never be able to move on from. Fortunately, no one with the ability to make these things happen has ever asked me the question.

  24. Just want to say that I read your entire article, and I'm happy that you didn't let previous misfortunes in life take away that optimism and enthusiasm to live, away from you. I have underwent the same difficult circumstances, but seriously and realistically speaking, it really depends on how you see the things that are happening to you. I wish you luck and girl, you made the right choice. Everything else in life will follow.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I absolutely agree with your choice, you expressed it so eloquently. Love is what makes the world go 'round. Money and knowledge are irrelevant to our soul.

    ReplyDelete
  26. We've made the same choice. Where there is love, there is joy. And nobody can't live without any sort of happiness.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I'd say you made the right choice. Everlasting love is the right choice because it is the one thing that we cannot guarantee for ourselves. In fact, it tis the one thing that is just so hard for all of us.

    ReplyDelete
  28. This would be a difficult question for me to answer but I think I would choose knowledge because I know what it feels like to grow up unloved so I learned to accept it a long time ago. Knowledge was and still is the key to me escaping from damaging situations and remain still tact. I am so sorry to hear about everything you have been through but what a strong woman you are. You inspire me x

  30. As The Beatles put it so well "all you need is love". After all, what good is unlimited wealth if you have no one to share it with?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Love reading your story. I believe love conquers all!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Love is an amazing emotion... it's the only emotion that makes you feel powerful (that you can and will DO anything) yet at the same time makes you completely vulnerable. While all 3 are important, love or lack there of helps mold us to who we are (our character)... someone who grew up in a loving environment will most likely be happy and thrive more in life, than someone who grew up with little love.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Knowledge is always great unless it turns into pride. Sounds like you are very knowledgeable and wise!

  34. Thank you for sharing your story Therese. I love reading this post. Very inspirational. I agree that love is always important in our live. Love keeps people together.

  35. I will always choose love over wealth and knowledge. Even as a child, I was taught that love is important, especially your love for your family. For me, without love, there is no life.

    ReplyDelete
  36. nice story, indeed it would really be difficult to choose amongst your choices...on hindsight, it's still great to be confronted with these issues than not having at all.Lol

  38. In a world where negativity dominates the headlines...it's always good to see testimonies like this that serve as a reminder of the power of love.

    ReplyDelete
  39. If I could choose only one of the three it would be everlasting love. You can have all the money you need but if you don't have someone to share your life with then how can you be happy.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Your story will definitely inspire more people out there to find out more about love and what it encompasses. I recently celebrated my first valentine's too and I truly learned more about love through the little things I did.

  41. I am 45 in my whole life I would have picked everlasting love. A surprise divorce has left me with barely anything including no car... which had to leave behin when I flew out of state to be with family has shown me just how hard it is to do anything without money. So I am changing gears and voting for the money.

  47. Beautifully said. I completely agree. I would choose love as well. There are words that come with love like unconditional love, true love, soul mate. That you don't hear with things like money or intelligence. They aren't so definite and will eventually fade or can fade. Love of God a parent or family is unconditional, love of a spouse if true can be called a soul mate. I always pick love.
